Leonard Smith was invited to attend a one-day meeting in Washington on the urgent problem of finding new ways to fund and implement long-term climate observations. The meeting was organised by Jim Baker (NOAA), Carl Wunsch (Harvard/MIT), Ray Schmitt (WHOI) and Ralph Keeling (SIO).
