The Centre for the Analysis of Time Series (CATS) was established in 2000 and was based within the Department of Statistics at LSE. It took a broad definition of 'time series' and developed a focus on predictability in theory, in practice, and in decision support. Our work has a very wide range of applications.

Climate Science Day, Capitol Hill, Washington DC
The purpose of the event is to bring scientists of many disciplines together to meet with members of Congress or their staff to discuss climate change and how it may affect a particular state or congressional district. The principal goals are for members or their staff to discuss climate science with scientists from their state with expertise on the topic and for them to contact the scientists should questions come up related to climate science. The first Climate Science Day was held in 2011.

Science2Inform
We believe that science can be presented to inform decision-makers while trying not to motivate the decision maker towards any particular course. We respect those who advocate specific actions, using good science to motivate decision makers, nevertheless #science2inform aims to provide science in as neutral a manner as humanly possible. We hold that this distinction is important and valuable. Science2inform presents evidence pro and con, highlights decision-relevant uncertainties, aiming to let the decision-maker make the decision. Science2motivate may advocate a particular action, policy or general stance; it still answers direct questions honestly.

The Lorentz Principles for the Communication of Model-based Information
Aims of the Lorentz Principles: How should the reliability of scientific findings be assessed and communicated to policy-makers? Different organizations, ranging from the IPCC to the CIA, have developed Uncertainty Guidances to assist experts in communicating uncertainties more clearly. Within many domains, however, such Uncertainty Guidance does not yet inform many numerate practitioners. This has restricted the development of a deeper understanding and characterization of what today’s science says, and hampered the communication of uncertainty in model-based findings to decision-makers in both the private and public sectors. The Lorentz Principles have been developed to meet that need, and the aim of this website is to facilitate further discussion, criticism, and refinement of the Lorentz Principles and their application.
